Modern laptops are generally very well made. True, not all manufacturers build to the same high quality. Companies like, say, Apple or HP, have very good reputations. But even outside of these brands, the overall quality levels are much higher these days.
The thing that will surprise you then is not that refurbished laptops are very reliable. It’s the fact that they are actually more reliable than brand new ones.
This is based on recent research carried out in South Africa. Thousands of older computers have been carefully monitored throughout their lives. Detailed records have been kept on their performance and reliability. This research has been done across all the brands and all operating systems as well.
The results are surprising. It turns out that the failure rate of refurbished or second-hand computers is around 1% but the failure rate of brand new computers can be as high as 5%.
Are refurbished laptops a good buy or a complete waste of money? The answer might surprise you. It certainly surprised us.
So it comes as a bit of a shock to learn that a second-hand laptop can actually be more reliable than a new one. But it makes perfect sense. Not least, when you consider the fact that a used computer will have had all the bugs ironed out. All those factory faults will have been resolved and anything that wasn’t up to spec will have been returned to the factory.
As a result, any laptop that’s survived its first year is probably going to last for a very long time. The statistics are quite surprising.
Up to 5% of all new computers will either arrive with a fault or develop one in the first year. But on average, only 1% of second-hand laptops will have a problem in the same time period. So that’s why we at Innovent are prepared to guarantee every single one of our products.
This makes a nonsense of the idea that you should only ever buy new IT if you want the best reliability. Surprising eh?
Not so surprising for some of the big companies we deal with every week. Major blue-chip companies use us to lease both new AND refurbished IT equipment. It means they get more IT for the same amount of money.
So you would be wrong if you thought that the leading companies only ever buy new laptops. Much of our business is with leading blue-chip companies. They are delighted to use what some people might call “second-hand” computers.
It also goes without saying that a second-hand laptop is going to be a lot inexpensive than a brand new one. For many big companies though, purchasing a pre-used laptop is not just about the cost savings.
Refurbished laptops for sale. Buying the best second-hand laptops.
There are many drivers in large cash-rich companies for a refurbished model rather than a new one. Here are just a few of those reasons.
- You may use a particular make and model throughout your company. It makes sense if the exact same model is given to all new starters.
- Bundled software or licencing may also be an issue here. Or it may just be a case of internal politics.
- Sometimes the business case simply isn’t there. Refurbished units are an ideal solution if you are trialling a new department within your company.
- We hate to say it but new laptops aren’t always an improvement on the old model. When Apple dropped the internal drive and the mini-jack it certainly upset a lot of people. Computer advancement is leaping ahead but it sometimes throws the baby out with the bathwater.
- It’s much easier for technical support to look after and maintain fifty of the same model laptop. It’s certainly a lot easier than four different generations of a computer all using different parts and software.
- Reconditioned laptops are inexpensive enough that you can even afford to have a couple of spares in the cupboard.

The Difference Between a Used and a Refurbished laptop.
A good reconditioned laptop is quite hard to distinguish from a new one. In fact, at Innovent we challenge our customers to tell the difference. Each laptop and computer that we supply is tested exhaustively.
We check for damaged or broken parts. This includes checking the battery, the screen quality and all the connections and ports.
We also carefully check the hard drives, the keyboard and the all-important power supply. The computer drives are then completely cleaned and reformatted. Older drives will be replaced as standard.
When you buy a laptop that’s been put through this rigorous testing process it can genuinely be described as “Refurbished”. If it hasn’t, it can only be described as simply “used equipment”. So when you ask for an “inexpensive or cheap previously used laptop” you have to be very careful what you wish for.
We’re so confident that our refurbished IT equipment will deliver consistently that we give it a full five-star guarantee. It’s important to us that you have 100% peace of mind. Any problems we will simply send you a replacement.
We also have exhaustive customer reviews which will help you decide which laptops offer the best value and performance. We would love to quote you on any make or model from our extensive range.
